The Water Resources Department is looking to fill 4 internship positions in the following divisions:
  • Two (2) Groundwater Resources
  • One (1) Water Resources (this position is closed)
  • One (1) Water Use Efficiency (this position is closed)

Interns are temporary employees who provide support for District staff at varying levels and who receive on-the-job training. Interns are assigned to work on a broad range of projects and assignments in different District units. Interns work side-by-side with District staff to obtain working knowledge and training in the area of assignment related to their field of study. Placement in this classification is temporary, and permanent employment is not guaranteed.

The District may not employ an Intern for more than six (6) months full time (21-30 hours per week), or if working on a part-time schedule (20 hours or less per week), more than 1,000 hours or 125 days in a fiscal year. Subject to these fiscal year time limits, intern work assignments are limited to a maximum of 12 months.

Examples of Duties


Groundwater Resources Division:
Positions involve working with engineers or hydrogeologists in providing technical oversight of investigations and remediations at leaking underground fuel tank or other types of spill sites in conformance to local, regional, and state guidelines. Typical tasks involved with these sites reviewing environmental consultants' proposals and reports, interpreting contaminate data, entering information into a database, data management, tracking the progress of the investigation and remediation, communicating with the public and environmental consultants, and preparing correspondence and case closure reports. May also assist in Groundwater Resources programs and projects such as Groundwater Basin Management, Groundwater modeling, Replenishment Assessment, wellhead protection, and well rehabilitation, operation, and maintenance.

Water Resources Division (this position is closed):
Position involves working with department Director and various technical staff on special projects related to management of the District's water resources and environmental programs. Typical tasks include reviewing and compiling information on District water and environmental programs to create new content for the District's public website and internal communications needs; reviewing and preparing comments on environmental documents and/or water policy documents; and researching emerging water or environmental issues and preparing advisory memos and/or presentations. May also assist other staff with special projects. The internship tasks will be completed using a variety of computer programs.

Water Use Efficiency Division (this position is closed) :
Position involves working with the Alameda County Water District (ACWD) Water Use Efficiency Team on key projects to help prepare the District to meet its Urban Water Use Objective, as set by the "Make Conservation a California Way of Life" legislation. Projects may involve executing an outreach plan to communicate the legislation to various interested parties, classifying customer accounts, and researching and categorizing sites and landscape areas in the District's service area as outlined in the legislation. Typical tasks may include developing outreach materials, preparing presentations, manipulating large amounts of data, tracking data, and preparing technical reports and memos. Internship tasks will be completed using a variety of computer programs.

Typical Qualifications


Groundwater Resources Division:
Strong analytical and research skills, including proficiency in spreadsheets and data management. Superior written and oral communication skills, as well as strong math skills. At least Junior college class standing. Completed coursework in environmental engineering, water treatment, groundwater resources, hydrogeology, and chemistry, is desirable.

Water Resources Division (this position is closed) : Superior written and oral communication skills, and strong analytical skills. Experience with Microsoft Word, Power Point, SharePoint, and website content creation/editing is desirable but not required. Must be currently enrolled in college (or starting this fall). Completed coursework in environmental science or engineering, water resources, water policy, environmental policy, or related fields, is desirable. May consider applicants who are interested in a summer-only assignment.

Water Use Efficiency Division (this position is closed) :
Strong analytical and research skills, and ability to work independently. Superior written and oral communication skills, and ability to prepare and disseminate information and outreach materials. Experience with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, GIS, and Excel is desirable. At least Junior class standing. Completed coursework in water resources, public administration, landscape design, engineering, environmental studies, public relations, natural sciences, or a related field is desirable.
