Western Connecticut State University’s Macricostas School of Arts & Sciences is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for a tenure track Assistant Professor in the department of Psychology. Start date of Fall 2025 is preferred, Spring 2026 will be considered.

The Macricostas School of Arts & Sciences is home to 10 departments , 17 undergraduate majors and four (4) graduate majors , and offers a variety of ways for students to further their education. The Department of Psychology consists of nine (9) full-time and 22 part-time faculty who support majors pursuing the Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master of Science degree in Addiction Studies. Position Summary: The successful candidate will teach in both the undergraduate (B.A. in Psychology) and graduate (M.S. in Addiction Studies) programs in the department of Psychology. Undergraduate courses may include Health Psychology, Psychopathology, Introduction to Psychology, the Psychology of Sustainability, and other related psychology courses. Graduate courses may include Substance Use and Co-occurring Disorders,  Development and Evaluation of Substance Use Disorders programs, and Master’s Project. The WCSU Psychology department utilizes the biopsychosocial model in training students, therefore commitment to and knowledge of these approaches are needed.

Supervision of student research, student advisement, and coverage of evening courses are also expected. Faculty are also expected to participate in departmental and university service by taking an active role in developing new curricula, maintaining an active research program, advising, and mentoring students, serving on departmental and university committees, assisting student groups on campus, and engaging in professional activity. Western has a 4/4 teaching load; class sizes are capped at between 15-38 students each.

Faculty may apply for course load reduction for research purposes beginning in their second year. Additionally, there are generous travel, research, and other grants awarded each year to support faculty training and conference attendance. There are opportunities to teach outside of the regular school year in the graduate program, which includes winter and summer courses. Mentorship of junior faculty and support for their professional development in the areas of instructional design, and teaching and learning are provided by faculty, aided by ample University resources .

Qualifications: Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology at time of employment from an APA-accredited program or an equivalent program accredited by a recognized international psychology accrediting body (CPA, BPS, APAC, EFPA). A BD applicants may be considered however, completion of degree must occur prior to the hire date of August 2025 (for Fall 2025 start date), or January 2026 (for Spring 2026). T he candidate must be licensed or license eligible as a psychologist in Connecticut.

Commitment to mentoring students pursuing careers in counseling/ addictions/ mental health field is highly desired. Experience and /or current practice in direct patient care and/or service delivery/therapy in general mental health and addiction treatment/prevention is highly preferred. This experience can be in behavioral health service settings, in clinical trials, in community prevention, or obtained during graduate/ postdoctoral training. A record of published research in an area of psychology and the ability to obtain grant funding in the field is preferred. Teaching experience is an advantage. Experience as a supervisor of counselors is preferred.

Candidates must also provide evidence of at least three (3) years of successful college teaching experience and departmental service. A candidate who does not meet the above standards may also be appointed provided the candidate has credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above experience.
