Position: Art Gallery Assistant Director Hours: 20 hours per week Pay Rate: $19.82/hr (effective July 1, 2025) Tentative Interview Dates: Beginning the end of May through Mid-June Required In-Person Onboarding: August 5th & 6th Required Attendance for Training: August 11th through 15th About The Art Gallery The Art Gallery is a non-profit arts and event space on the top floor of the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Our student-funded and student-staffed gallery is dedicated to amplifying artistic works of artists on and off campus. We provide exhibitions that feature artists at any stage in their career. The gallery hosts exhibits, popup shows, and receptions annually. Position Summary The Art Gallery Assistant Director supports the Art Gallery Director in the daily operations of the gallery, assisting with exhibitions, marketing, administrative tasks, and visitor engagement. This position is ideal for a student pursuing a degree in Art History, Fine Arts, Museum Studies, or a related field who wants hands-on experience in gallery management. Job Description Provides suggestions and feedback to the Director for upcoming events. Assists Director in researching and scheduling new artists & networks to increase artist presence and gallery visibility. Trains interns on gallery operations, exhibition preparation, mailing, and publicity. Collaborates with the art gallery team on the execution of upcoming exhibitions and greets gallery visitors during regular business hours. Assists Director with exhibition setup, artwork installation, and event coordination. Provides support during exhibition openings, artist talks, and receptions. Contributes to the gallery’s social media and website updates. Attends/hosts bi-weekly meetings. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Be currently enrolled at SFSU with a minimum of 6 units a semester for undergraduates or 4 units for graduates. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Preferred Art History, Studio, IAC Museum Studies, Ethnic Studies, Sociology, and related fields. Familiarity with Mac, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or social media platforms. Knowledge in exhibition design and preparation. Knowledge of art handling. Skills Exceptional interpersonal skills. Reliable and consistently punctual. Effective team building and collaboration. Ability to work within an environment that is ethnically and culturally diverse, emphasizing knowledge and values related to cross and trans-cultural communication and relations. Analytical, decisive, and detail-oriented with strong communication and organizational skills. Strong computer competency (Macintosh) including spreadsheet and word processing programs, writing memos, organizing meetings, and filing.
